Today is the day! The official start of the 2017-18 NHL season. Here are some thoughts on what the upcoming season will bring for the Western Conference.
Vegas Golden Knights
Ahh, I love a fresh start! It’s the first season in the league for the Golden Knights and if they play in the regular season like they did in preseason (nine goals!), well, they’re going to have a good season.
My husband is a huge hockey fan. And while he is a Bruins fan, he was extremely annoyed when the Blackhawks traded winger Artemi Panarin. “They’re going to regret that,” he said. Sure, they brought back Brandon Saad who was previously with the team, but he’s not Panarin. The good news? They still have Patrick Kane but something tells me they’re going to regret letting Panarin go.
For a talented team, the Winnipeg Jets were a big disappointment last season. They didn’t make any noteworthy moves in the offseason, but that isn’t much of a surprise given that, again, they’re a talented team. An inconsistent talented team. Will they find a rhythm that supports their strengths? Maybe? Maybe not?
And The Others?
The Los Angeles Kings are pretty much the same team as last season…the same mediocre team that didn’t show much life last season. The San Jose Sharks are also a replica of their 2016-2017 selves. That replica is of a great, but aging team. If I were to guess, I’d say they have a good chance at a good season but will face some big changes heading into 2018-2019.
