The First Few Weeks of the 72nd NBA Season

The NBA started their 72nd regular season on October 17, 2017 when the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors hosted the Houston Rockets. A lot has gone on so far…between injuries (ahem, Gordon, ahem), conversation about the marijuana ban, LeBron’s elbow…the list goes on. Right now the NBA has 30 teams and somewhere around 300 players on opening-day rosters. There is so much going on that I have decided to take three (Kyrieeee for threeeee) approaches to dive into some of the most interesting things that are raising my eyebrows, so, welcome to my first trifecta of On the Court, Off the Court, and the Court Itself.

On the Court- #27 Daniel Theis

The Boston Celtics have had a rocky start to their 2017-2018 season, leading them into the decision to give Theis his first NBA career start. Fans chanted “Theis, Theis, Baby!” but most of us agree that the 25 year old, 6 foot 9 inch German power forward/center didn’t adapt well to his teammate star players. He shot one HORRIBLE shot, posted zero points, five rebounds, and one block. I would personally love to see Theis start on Saturday against the Miami Heat and step up his game now that he has his career start jitters out of the way.

Off the Court- Jeremy Lin

Lin has been bouncing back and forth between NBA teams since 2010. He is spending his second year with the Brooklyn Nets this season, and he has 18 points contributing to his team’s highest points per game average in the NBA so far this season. It seems like more fans are focused on what is growing out of his head rather than his performance on the court. On October 3rd, just a couple weeks before the start of the season, Lin published an article and tweeted the link out to his fans “So…About My Hair”, with the explanation that he never thought he’d ever “think so much about hair”. With this article as well as public supports from other NBA players (Kemba Walker actually gave Lin a do-rag, and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson made an agreement to also grow his hair out), Lin is at the forefront of the cultural appropriation hair brigade.

The Court Itself- The Bucks Court

The Bucks decided to bring back some old-school rivalry by bringing back the historically famous Mecca floor for their match-up against the Boston Celtics. This is the Bucks’ 50th season in the NBA, and of those, they spent 20 seasons in The Mecca, which is now the home court for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Bucks had their floor recreated to look like the old-school Mecca as a celebration, and it was played on for one game only against their rival, The Boston Celtics. If you’d like to see pictures of the neon green, yellow, orange, red, and blue color scheme, check out the hashtag #ReturnToTheMECCA on twitter.

Nina is a 20 year old college student from Massachusetts. She loved playing and analyzing sports her whole life and is an avid fantasy football and basketball player. Nina is also the captain of the Lesley University Lynx Cheer team. Her favorite teams are the Patriots and Celtics and wherever Aaron Rodgers and Kelly Olynk are playing!

One response to “The First Few Weeks of the 72nd NBA Season

  1. On the positive side, Theis was actually +1 in his minutes for that game. On the negative side, Baynes was +12 and likely play for that reason. Really though its an upgrade over Zeller, and Theis has more potential.

Lin’s injury robbed us of that hair style for the rest of the year. Very sad.
