Pop Culture Roundup: The Met Gala Edition

Each spring, athletes dress to the nines and join the wave of celebs that turn out for the Met Gala. Luckily for those of us who look forward to the gala’s often-outrageous stylistic offerings, this year was no different.

The theme for the evening was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. Since 1972, guests have been invited to dress in a way that reflects the theme, allowing fashion to take center stage as the evening’s art show.

Here are the looks from names you’re likely to see in the sports columns.

Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen

The most meme-worthy ensemble of the night goes to the Pats QB. His wife, professional beautiful person Gisele Bundchen, looked as gorgeous as always in gold Versace. Brady wore a black suit with what appeared to be some sort of matador jacket

Apparently, Mr. Bundchen needs to crank up his water intake, because he has since received some pretty sick burns on social media.

Brady claims that Gisele picked out his outfit. Whatever, Tom.

Cam Newton

The Panthers QB isn’t exactly known for his understated fashion sense. The man owns Versace jeans, and regularly steps out in only the flashiest jackets, hats, and accessories.

That being said, his Gala look took things to a new level. Wearing a colorful Tom Ford suit and his signature wide-brimmed hat, Newton topped off his look with a pair of thick-rimmed tinted shades.

Only Cam Newton could manage to pull off this style.

Shaun White

The Olympic star swapped out his snowboarding gear for a snappier look. With a pair of dark green pants, a green and gold jacquard jacket, and gold chains over a low-necked white tee, his was one of the more low key looks of the night.

Lewis Hamilton

The Formula One star dazzled in celestial white as he walked the Gala’s famous red carpet. The Tommy Hilfiger suit was embellished with a ton of crystal beading, and, uh–it was intense.

Hamilton also wore ultra-sparkly matching Loriblu boots, which were adorned with freshwater pearls and white crystals on Italian leather.

Robert Kraft and Ricki Lender

The Pats owner turned up to the big event with his girlfriend, Ricki Lender.

The unconventional couple looked ready for spring. Lender was pretty in purple, wearing an ethereal floral gown and carrying a jeweled clutch. Kraft was dapper in a black tuxedo, choosing to accessorize with a pink pocket square and a pair of Nike Air Force 1’s with a bejeweled swoosh.

Special Mention: The Wives Section

Gabrielle Union

The gorgeous actress/wife of Dwayne Wade looked radiant in Vatican yellow (which is apparently a thing).

Kate Upton

Justin Verlander is a lucky man. The supermodel/frequent SI cover girl was stunning in a teal hooded gown, topping off her risky yet flawless look with a gold tiara.
