NBA Offseason Moves: The Phoenix Suns (But Really, Deandre Ayton)

When I was researching the Phoenix Suns and their offseason, I found a ton of articles and reviews telling me that I should be excited for this team this season. From everything I’ve read, the team did a great job at addressing the two areas they needed the most help in, “defensive versatility and perimeter shooting.” How, did they do this? By making three fantastic moves in the draft and one FANTASTIC move in the draft. Specifically, Mikal Bridges, Elie Okobo, and De’Anthony Melton were fantastic picks. Deandre Ayton, though? FANTASTIC.

Discussions around all four draft picks are all positive. Although, I think SB Nation said it best, :”what four of those players have in common is off the charts upside coupled with either above-average defensive or offensive capabilities.”

But what I keep reading over and over and over again is how great a player the number one pick out of this year’s draft, Deandre Ayton, is. Every review I’ve read praises this kid’s ability, both on offense and defense. In fact, one article reviewing Ayton’s preseason debut from last night noted that, “Deandre Ayton might be the NBA’s next great man in the middle.” Considering that at the end of the game he had a total of 24 points and 10 rebounds (12 points I believe, within the first 15 minutes of the first half), it’s hard to argue with that quote. Take a few minutes to watch some highlights on Ayton like I just did. You’ll see first hame how this kid can play offensive and defense like a King. Oh, that nickname is already taken, you say? Shame.

Needless to say, it seems like the Suns won the draft this year with Ayton.
