Because most rookies don’t get enough credit, we’ll be highlighting some top performances by the NFL’s next generation.
Defense: Week 15
Tyquan Lewis, DE, Indianapolis Colts
There’s little question that Colts rookie Darius Leonard will be the Defensive Rookie of the Year. He leads the league in tackles for a resurgent Colts team that’s waaaaaay better on defense than expected. But he’s had some help recently in the form of rookie pass rusher Tyquan Lewis out of Ohio St. The Colts second rounder had his best game thus far in the Colts shutout of Dallas in week 15. He spent his entire afternoon in the Dallas backfield, sacking Dak Prescott twice for -16 yards and generally wreaking havoc. It’s an element of the Indianapolis defense that had gone quiet through the middle of the season. The Colts recorded only ten sacks in the months of October and December but have dialed up the heat as they contend for an AFC wildcard slot, recording ten this month with two more games to play. Thus far, Lewis has been used sparingly, primarily in situations when his skills at rushing the passer are needed, but if he can keep up the QB pressures, and the Colts keep winning, you could see him work into a much larger role going forward.
