Defense: Week 11
Jaire Alexander, DB, Green Bay Packers
The Packers did some draft night shuffling, moving down four slots and getting their guy, but adding the Saints 2019 first round pick in the process. While that pick is clearly going to be late in the round, it’s still a nice pickup, especially when you ended up grabbing the guy you wanted in the first place. Jaire Alexander is a lean, twitchy DB out of Louisville, and while injuries have been a concern, he’s a solid piece that helps the Packers shore up their porous secondary. He graded out as a second DB before the draft, but he’s looking like more of a lockdown guy at the pro level. He’s shown an ability to stay glued to receivers, forcing opposing quarterbacks into their second or third options. While he hasn’t been piling up stats, his effectiveness has clearly elevated a Packers secondary that now ranks in the top five in passing yards allowed. It hasn’t gone unnoticed, either. Pro Football Focus ranks him as this year’s top-graded rookie DB this far this season. His abilities have teams looking the other way, and it looks like the Packers will have tighter pass defense for years to come.
