2019 Draft Needs Tracker: Pittsburgh Steelers

With the draft looming a few short weeks away, teams are busy figuring out who can make their teams better. Here’s my take on what your team needs to do in the draft to take the next step.

AFC North: Pittsburgh Steelers

Picks

1 st Round: 20
2 nd Round:52
3 rd Round: 84

Speaking of needing a quarterback… With Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown both out the door in Pittsburgh, I think it’s likely we’re seeing the end of the Ben Roethlisberger era as well. Big Ben toyed with retirement a few seasons ago, and while he’s a big, strong signal caller who’s hard to bring down, I doubt that he’ll be feeling spry by mid-season at age 37. That’s not to say that I’m assuming he’ll retire in the offseason, but I’m not sure that they have an heir apparent in the building yet, with Joshua Dobbs and Mason Rudolph as the current backups. I’m sure that the Steelers would love to address this in a later round, but again, I’m not loving the depth of this quarterback class, so wouldn’t be surprised to see the Steelers active in the offseason, looking for a younger guy to groom. I hear that Josh Rosen might become available, so there’s that. If they’re operating on the assumption that Big Ben has at least a season or two left in the tank, it would be wise to shore up a spotty defense that wasn’t dominant in any way last season. Sure, they were a top-ten unit overall, but they were squarely middle of the pack in points allowed. When you subtract Brown and Bell from the mix, the defense has to help pick up the slack. Some depth in the secondary would be great and a linebacker to fill the void left by Ryan Shazier would go a long way. Not that that’s an easy fix, but they’ve got to try.
