2019 Draft Needs Tracker: Tennessee Titans

With the draft looming a few short weeks away, teams are busy figuring out who can make their teams better. Here’s my take on what your team needs to do in the draft to take the next step.

AFC South: Tennessee Titans

Picks
1st Round: 19
2nd Round: 51
3rd Round: 83

You’d think that at 9-7, the Titans are only a piece or two away from contending. But there’s some buzz that maybe Marcus Mariota can’t get the Titans to the promised land. It’s not unfounded. Mariota ranked 26 th in the league in passing yards and 28 th in completions for over twenty yards. He threw only eleven touchdowns to eight interceptions. That’s not great. He was dinged up at points, so I give him the benefit of the doubt, but his 2,528 yards are a low- water mark in his four-year career. With that being said, he did sit out week seventeen and was clearly not himself down the stretch. If the injury isn’t a long-term concern for Tennessee’s management, then I think the Titans need to look hard at receivers in this draft. Mariota will need weapons to elevate his game, and while Deion Lewis and Derrick Henry can provide some spark, they’ll need a downfield threat to make noise. They didn’t have a 1,000-yard receiver last season, and that’s not surprising, given Mariota’s struggles. Speed was on display in abundance during this year’s combine, so the Titans won’t have to look too hard to find a guy who could take the top off of defenses and spread the field. It’s asking a lot for a single receiver to completely open up the passing game, so I expect that they’ll be looking for a pass-catching tight end to add to the mix as well. On defense, the Titans were the sixth-ranked pass defense last season, but a bit below middle of the pack against the run, so I’ll expect they’d like to shore up that unit with a sideline to sideline linebacker, or a run-stuffing defensive lineman, depending on who’s available in the middle rounds.
