You know what I love? When I’m watching a hockey game and the away team (the sucky team) scores, but then the play is reviewed, and the officials reverse the call. NO GOAL!
You know what I don’t love? When I’m watching a basketball game and the sucky team makes a blatant foul that isn’t called, a perfectly good dunk opportunity is missed, and the Raptors lose the game. MARC GASOL WE FEEL YOU BRO!
But then again, you know what I love? The fact that this is going to change.
There are two new entries into the NBA rule book for the 2019-20 season: the Automatic Review and the Coach’s Challenge. The Automatic Review will happen when the replay center automatically reviews to see whether a shot was a 2 or 3-pointer. It will also check “whether a shot clock violation occurred anytime outside the final two minutes of regulation or overtime.”
The Coach’s Challenge is what’s really piquing interest. Yes, they will now be able to challenge a bad call! It’ll only be one call per game, and they’ll have to use one of their timeouts in order to do it, but it’s still gonna happen! This new rule is only being tried out for the 2019-20 season, but hopefully, it will then be adopted permanently. Basketball needs to catch up with all the other sports – hockey, football, lacrosse even.
Most NBA fans have been waiting forever for this change to come about. Thinking back to the last playoff season, there are SO many times, so many calls that could have been challenged and made a huge difference for the Raps! Yes, they still won the championship, but it could have been over even earlier, after Game 5, if Nurse had been allowed to challenge the non-call that should have been thrown at DeMarcus Cousins (watch it here).
Blue-eyed dreamboat – uh, I mean, sure-footed superstar Steph Curry should have been called for palming the ball in Game 3 (see it here at 3:24). Kyle Lowry most definitely didn’t interfere with Klay Thompson’s shot in Game 2 (here at 2:14). It can even be conceded (grudgingly) that Draymond Green’s basket in Game 6 should have been counted as a 3-pointer (here at 2:10). If the Coach’s Challenge rule had existed during these games, their outcomes could have been so incredibly different.
And these are just the calls that could have been challenged during the finals. Imagine the possibilities for the regular season! The mind reels.
As if Raps fans needed more reasons to anticipate the 2019-20 season. Bring it on!
