Iso Joe is Back!

Iso Joe is Back!

After an impressive run with the Triplets in the Big3, guard/forward Joe Johnson is headed back to the NBA.

On Thursday, Johnson signed with the Detroit Pistons on a one-year deal, said to be worth $2.6 million.  Before signing with Detroit, Johnson also worked out for the 76ers, Bucks and Nets and there was rumored to be interest from the Clippers and Nuggets in the savvy veteran.

During his stint in the Big 3, Johnson played well and showed that he could still help an NBA team. He had multiple game-winners and earned the league’s MVP award. He carried theTriplets to the playoffs, where they beat the Killer 3s to win the championship.

Johnson’s success in the Big 3 caught the attention of GM’s around the Association. The 38-year old still has something left in the tank and can contribute to the right team. Now, he has a chance to prove it.

Johnson is a skilled veteran with a ton of NBA experience. He was selected by the Celtics with the 10th pick of the 2001 draft, but his time with the Celtics was brief, as Boston traded him to the Phoenix Suns the very same season.

“Iso Joe” flourished with the Suns, where he went from averaging 9.6 points per game in his first season to 17.1 PPG in 2004.  After his tenure in Phoenix, he signed with the Atlanta Hawks in 2005.

Johnson played well with the Hawks and even averaged a career-high 25 points per game in the Atlanta offense that keyed on his skill set. He became the highest-paid player in the league (at that time) after re-signing with the Hawks for $123.7 million. After that big contract, Johnson became something of an NBA journeyman, signing with the Nets, Heat, Jazz, and the Rockets. He averaged only six points per game in a reduced role during his time in Houston.

Since then, Johnson has been out of the NBA.

While I wanted him to sign with a contender, Johnson made the right decision. If he contributes to the Pistons, it could truly be a win-win for both sides.
