The Knicks make it so freakin’ difficult to root for them. Following New York’s 2-8 start to the season, league sources told ESPN that Knicks president Steve Mills is starting the process for the eventual dismissal of head coach David Fizdale.
This is hot garbage. The old dysfunctional Knicks would have fired Fizdale. They are supposed to be more functional now. The Knicks are properly rebuilding for the first time in 20 years and part of that process is having stability in their coaching staff. It is a bad decision for their young team to fire their head coach only ten games into the season.
The Knicks won 17 games last season. Beginning 2-8 is disappointing, but what did you expect? They were one of the worst teams in the NBA last season and expecting them to contend for the playoffs right out of the gate is a lofty vision.
The Knicks shouldn’t blow everything up because they are off to a bad start. The team should be trying to develop their young talent and turn them into long-term pieces. The Knicks need to focus on developing their roster before they start firing head coaches for not being playoff contenders. It will be a successful season for the Knicks if RJ Barrett, Kevin Knox, Mitchell Robinson, and Frank Ntilikina all show growth. There is no reason to put their players in a situation where they need to work with a new head coach abruptly in the middle of the season when they were never seriously going to contend for the playoffs.
If the Knicks organization wants to take the next step, they need patience. They shouldn’t scrap the last year and a half of developing a system with Fizdale and start fresh. They need to build on what they have. It will not be good for the young Knicks players to have a completely different coaching staff after only two weeks into the season. All of the work they have done with Fizdale over the last year would be a waste.
Good organizations keep a stable coaching staff. The Knicks have had six head coaches this decade. The Knicks will never get out of their organizational slump if they keep firing their head coaches.
I don’t know if David Fizdale is the guy to lead the next contending Knicks team. But, I would like to find out.
