AFC Playoff Preview: Divisional Weekend – Texans @ Chiefs

Houston Texans (10-6) at Kansas City Chiefs (11-5)

Sunday, January 12th, 3:05 pm EST.

The Texans won the regular season tilt between these two teams in week six, 31-24.  Patrick Mahomes had a so-so night, going 19/35 for 273 yards with three TDs and an interception.  What? That’s a down game for Mahomes. Seriously. It was his sixth worst performance of the season by both yardage and passer rating.  And his second lowest completion percentage all year. Add to that the fact that Mahomes ran the ball only once for negative one yard, before fumbling and losing the ball, and you’ve got one of the worst games of his career to date.  Yup. He’s that good.

I tell you all of this to point out that this playoff game won’t shake out like that one. Since that loss, the Chiefs have lost only one game in which Mahomes played, in week ten at Tennessee. Mahomes had a monster game, throwing for 446 yards and three TDs in that one, but Derrick Henry was more effective, AVERAGING an insane 8.2 yards per carry for 188 yards and two TDs.  The Texans will keep it close early, and J.J. Watts return should keep Mahomes on his toes, but at the end of the day, Ravens vs. Chiefs is the AFC Championship game we all expect to see. We’ll see it.

Prediction: Mahomes has a signature-type playoff game, throwing for over 350 yards and a few TDs as the Chiefs gradually pull away from the Texans.  Deshaun Watson will rack up the yards, but it won’t be enough to keep it close as time expires.

Chiefs 35 – Texans 24
