The Raps Pay Tribute to Kobe Bryant – And Other Lesser Stories From The Raptors

Kobe.

By now, most of you know that Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter, and seven other passengers died in a helicopter crash today (Sunday) in Calabasas, California. Even I, a relative newcomer to being new to sportsfan-dom, know how great Kobe Bryant is. He was THE sports star when I was in high school and all my sporty friends had dreams of being half as good as him. He is a legend whose star will only shine brighter as time goes on.

As a new sportsfan, I didn’t realize that Kobe’s insane 81-point game (which I DID know about!) happened when he and the Lakers played the Raptors! Honestly, knowing that we were the ones involved in that historic game means that it doesn’t even matter that we lost it.

During today’s game, both the Raps and the Spurs each took a 24-second violation as they held the ball while the shot clock ticked on – all in honor of Kobe Bryant, who wore the number 24 in the latter years of his career. If that doesn’t make you tear up, I don’t know what will.

Pascal.

Our boy is an All Star, baby! I mean, he’s always been an All Star in my heart, and now I know that people across North America feel the same way I do, otherwise he wouldn’t have been voted in. It’s just so great to know that last year’s Most Improved Player has worked his butt off to win a spot on a team made up of the best of the best – he just keeps improving! Also, it makes We The North even more proud to know that this is the sixth consecutive year we’ve had a Raps player voted in as one of the starting five All Stars.

Trade Deadline.

Last year, Masai Ujiri made it VERY clear that he isn’t scared of making big, shocking moves around trade deadline time. The way he acquired both Marc Gasol and Kawhi Leonard last year was both jaw-dropping and nerve-wracking – but it sure did pay off! So steel your nerves, peeps, cause it’s that time of year again.
