Oregon’s Sabrina Ionescu Becomes First in NCAA to Notch 2,000 Points, 1,000 Rebounds, and 1,000 Assists

The Queen has pronounced her arrival with fire and fury.

On February 24th, Oregon’s Sabrina Ionescu notched yet another triple double on the way to becoming the first Division I NCAA basketball player in either league to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 1,000 assists.

Ionescu had passed the 2,000 point and 1,000 assist benchmarks prior to Monday, but grabbed the last nine she needed (and three more for good measure) in the Ducks win over the Stanford Cardinals.

Ionescu finished the night with 21 points, and both 12 rebounds and assists. Setting NCAA records is nothing new for Sabrina, who also holds the record for most triple doubles for a college basketball player of any gender and has, over the past two years, come to be recognized as one of the greatest college athletes of all time. Reaching 2000, 1000, and 1000 on February 24th held special emotional significance to Ionescu, however, as it capped off a day that began down in Los Angeles, where Sabrina spoke at the memorial service for Gigi and Kobe Bryant (2 for Gigi, 24 for Kobe), reflecting on the impact they both had had on her young life and career.

On a day where the basketball community mourned the loss of both a great advocate for and a future star of the women’s basketball; it was exciting to hear Ionescu, who has the potential to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time in either the W or the NBA, speak on that loss and then go on to fly home and make history. Sabrina Ionescu is ready to set the WNBA on fire when she’s drafted this summer, mostly likely by the New York Liberty with the first pick (barring a trade or a weird Vlade Divac style draft mess up).

Sabrina Ionescu is special. And like, really special. Greatest of all time special. Let me be absolutely clear: If you miss Sabrina Ionescu in March Madness, you are a fool and will regret if for the rest of your life. If you miss Sabrina Ionescu in her first season in the WNBA, you are a fool and will regret it. For the rest of your life. Sabrina Ionescu is a comet soaring overhead, radiant with fire and intensity. Sabrina Ionescu is a once in a lifetime wonder or spectacle, look up, and take her in.
