The Last Dance – Please, For the Love of God, Stop

For those who have seen The Last Dance: Please, For the Love of God, Stop Using the Term “Trans-Bronsexual” to Refer To LeBron James Fans.

Gas has been thrown on the fire of the GOAT debate between LeBron James and Michael Jordan revived by ESPN’s airing of the documentary series The Last Dance, documenting Jordan’s last season as a Chicago Bull.

Twitter is aflame with LeBron fans and Michael Jordan fans going at each other’s throats, claiming that each star owes their legacy to Kyrie Irving, or Scottie Pippen, or Ray Allen, or Dennis Rodman. No punch has been held back. And while healthy debate among fans is something that’s needed now more than ever in the sports world, it seems that respect has gone completely out of the window.

Critics of LeBron James have, for some reason, some bizarre, bigoted reason, decided to dub his defenders “Trans-Bronsexuals”. That is, of course, calling to reference identity categories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals to mind in order to imply LeBron and his fans are weak, or overly sensitive, or effeminate. And, as a non-binary, bisexual sports writer who does, admittedly, also love LeBron James. I have this to say:

Stop it.

I’m so tired. You are all acting like children. I’m so so tired. Please, just stop. I’m not offended, or triggered, or whatever. I’m just exhausted. This is so dumb. I simply cannot tolerate this absolute buffoonery anymore. Just stop. Please.

I’m not going to go into the complexities of why this is offensive. I am not going to press you to reflect on your complete inability to accept change. I am not going to draw comparisons between those who cannot accept that there is a new way of playing basketball and those who cannot accept that there is a new (well, not actually new, we’ve been around) way of living in the world. And I’m not going to make an impassioned, verbose plea for creating space for queer and trans sports fans in the NBA community. This would all fall on dead ears, because everyone using this term is a child. I’m just going to say: Stop. Bad. No. Now go sit in the corner and sit and think about what you did.
