WNBA Announces They Will Not Play

After the shooting of Jacob Blake by Kenosha Wisconsin Police Officers back on August 23rd, the Milwaukee Bucks announced they would not be playing tonight’s game 5 versus the Orlando Magic, leading to the rest of the NBA games being postponed for tonight. After that announcement, the attention immediately turned to the WNBA.

The Washington Mystics walked into the arena wearing shirts spelling out Jacob Blake’s name with seven bloody bullet holes in their back.

In the Las Vegas Aces post practice zoom, guard Angel McCoughtry did shine some light on the potential decision saying, “We might be doing the same thing, from the talks that I’ve heard.” ESPN Sideline reporter at just after 6 pm eastern time, with the games scheduled to tip off at 7 pm, tweeted out, that all of the players from the Washington Mystics, Atlanta Dream, LA Sparks, Minnesota Lynx, and Connecticut Sun and Phoenix Mercury were meeting on the floor, deciding whether to play tonight. It was during that meeting that they initially agreed to play before changing their minds and deciding not to play.

On ESPN, Atlanta Dream center Elizabeth Williams, read a statement on behalf of all the WNBA players playing tonight to Holly Rowe saying, “The consensus is to not play tonight, and to lock arms and raise fists during the National Anthem. We stand in solidarity with our brothers in the NBA and will continue this conversation with all our brothers and sisters across all leagues and look to take collective action….We encourage everyone to go and register to vote, now, today. If you truly believe that Black Lives Matter, then vote. Go and complete the 2020 census now.”

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said that it is still unclear whether or not the six games scheduled for tomorrow night, August 27th, will proceed as scheduled.
