Notre Dame vs Pitt Preview

The No. 3 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish look to go 5-0 when they take on the 3-3 Pitt Panthers. Pitt is reeling suffering three consecutive losses by a combined 92-78. This game is Notre Dame’s first road game this season, while this is Pitt’s first home game since October 3rd

This is the 71st time that these two teams have played with Notre Dame owning a 48-21-1 record. The Irish are currently on a 2-game winning streak in this series, last having played on October 13th, 2018, with the Fighting Irish getting a 19-14 win.

In the Fighting Irish’s last game, they carried a lackluster performance to a 12-7 win over Louisville. They were led by Kyren Williams’ third 100+ yard rushing game of the season, coming in at 127 yards. 

In Pitt’s last game they fell to the Miami Hurricanes 31-19. Panthers QB Joey Yellen threw for 277 yards and 1 touchdown but, failed to keep up with D’Eriq King’s 222 yards and 4 touchdowns. 

Key for Pitt: Force Notre Dame to run the ball

This season, the Irish have relied heavily on their running game, averaging 261 yards per game and 13 touchdowns total. While, the passing attack has only averaged 179.8 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Panthers have a stout run defense only allowing 61.5 rushing yards per game and sacking QBs 29.0 times this season, both tops in the FBS. 

Key for Notre Dame: Force Pitt Punts

Pitt has punted 26 times this year and has converted on 3rd down only 35.79% off the time, which is good for 13th in the ACC, out of 15 teams. While Notre Dame leads the ACC in 3rd down defense only allowing opponents to convert on 20.8% of third downs. 

Prediction: 24-17 Notre Dame wins
