New Kit Alert! Sky Blue FC Rebrands to Gotham FC Prior to 2021 NWSL Season

NWSL Team Sky Blue FC has announced a rebranding to New Jersey/New York Gotham FC before the start of the 2021 season. The team known as Sky Blue since their founding in 2006 have recently moved into a new home at Red Bull Arena full time. The switch was announced with a hype video published on social media with members of the team, including Paige Monaghan, Sabrina Flores, McCall Zerboni and Kailen Sheridan playing soccer and working out around New York City and New Jersey.

The newly-minted Gotham FC released a statement about the change with general manager Alysa LaHue discussing the decisions that led to the change.

“This process is the culmination of a wide-ranging collaboration among our fans, players, front office, and owners,” LaHue said. “The club has a tremendous history and close relationship with its fans, so it was important we listened and remained completely openminded throughout the process. What emerged is a new brand that is overwhelmingly fan driven, respectful of the club’s past, and representative of a promising future.”

The new Gotham FC logo was designed by graphic designer Matthew Wolf, who has worked with other organizations including MLS team NYCFC, and Ligue 1 team Paris Saint Germain. In a tweet about the logo, Wolf said, “(I) Did the majority of my sketching in Riverside Park, overlooking the Hudson River and NJ. One of my favorite parks in NYC.”

The team spoke about the logo saying that the colors will remain sky blue but with Gotham black and cloud white mixed in. The top of the logo featuring the crown that sits atop the Statue of Liberty’s head is a subtle nod to the iconic landmark between the two states.

The players are excitedly embracing the change, as goalie Kailen Sheridan posted the video on her Instagram story saying, “Club did a lil thing…..okay it’s a big thing lol.” The team is also excitedly promoting the change with “#rebrandseason”

The sudden change sets the stage for the 2021 NWSL season as Gotham FC  is set to open up the season on April 14, when they will make the trip to Orlando to take on the Orlando Pride in their new colors.
